Antwerp: The City of Diamonds

Today's post is dedicated to Antwerp (called Antwerpen in Dutch), a city in Belgium. With a total population of a little over half a million people, Antwerp is a second largest city in the country. It should tell you how small Belgium is compared to other countries of the world if the second largest city is home to just half a million people. However, the port of Antwerp is one of the biggest in Europe and is recognized globally as one of the largest chemical clusters in the world with seven of the world's top ten chemical companies having their plants in or near Antwerp. Additionally, Antwer has been historically recognized as one the major centers for diamond trade, a feat which is still relevant today. It is estimated that 85% of the world's rough diamonds are passed through Antwerp and diamonds are a multi-billion dollar industry in Antwerp.

Aesthetically Antwerp does not differ from other Belgium cities that I have seen. The architectural style is quite similar across the regions, however, as compared to Bruges which looks like it got frozen in time, Antwerp does have modern architecture incorporated into the city. Historically, Antwerp has been a very important and a wealthy city. Centuries ago the city welcomed persecuted Jews from all over Europe, inviting them to set up residency in the city and open up stores. Many of these Jews were merchants and expert diamond cutters who put Antwerp on the map as a diamond capital of the world. This trend is still relevant today and with the city's location near the water Antwerp is in a position for economic success.

Main points of interest in the city include the beautiful Antwerp Central train station which was constructed at the beginning of 20th century and has been recognized by many as one of the world's most beautiful train stations. There is of course Grote Markt, a town square in the center of the city, which has the Brabo Fountain in the center and the famous 16th century guild halls. Around the square, there are numerous cafes, bars, and restaurants. Given that Antwerp is a small city you can make Grote Markt your starting point and then walk around the city if you want to see other points of interest.

I would not call Antwerp a must see city of Europe, however, if you plan a trip to Belgium you can definitely dedicate a day to this city. Similar to other cities of Belgium, history is well preserved and with the right weather this excursion can turn into a pleasant experience. I definitely enjoyed the sights and the Belgian beer while getting to know Antwerp.
